In summer 2009, student-interns worked with Asodenic, a microfinance organization in the capital city of Managua, to deliver health education to women's groups. The students created a curriculum that included information on cervical cancer, breast cancer, and diarrheal disease. They also traveled to the Maria Luisa Ortiz Cooperative in Mulukuku with a medical brigade from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston to implement and gather feedback on the diagnostic lab-in-a-backpack, a backpack to promote obstetric and gynecological care in low-resource settings. The MLO clinic was established in 1990 and serves an estimated 13,500 patients per year, focusing on healthcare for women and children, family planning, and cervical cancer screening.
