Dr. Maluf graduated as a physician from the University of São Paulo, where he worked in a general surgery residency program and was a fellow in gastrointestinal endoscopy. He leads the Endoscopy Unit at Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo, which he founded, treating over 10,000 patients annually.

In addition to his MD from the University of São Paulo, he has a master's degree, doctorate, and PhD from the University of São Paulo. He has been a principal investigator in collaborative research with Baylor University, supported by an NIH grant.
