Dr. Honorati Masanja is the Chief Executive Director at the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), a position he has held since 2016. He joined the IHI in 1992 and held various positions within the organization, including the Director of Research, Head of the Data Analysis Cluster, and Statistician. With a PhD in Epidemiology from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel, Dr. Masanja has extensive experience in data management, clinical trials, and the design and evaluation of large maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition programmes. Dr. Masanja is an adjunct Professor at the Nelson Mandela African Institute for Science and Technology (NM-AIST) where he teaches and supervises students for the MSc in Public Health Research. He has also been involved in the teaching and supervision of MSc students at the University of Dar es Salaam and Witwatersrand University, South Africa. Dr. Masanja has published extensively in internationally renowned journals. He successfully established the Rufiji Health and Demographic Surveillance System for the evaluation of health system interventions and the Sentinel Panel of Districts (SPD), a national platform for evaluating health sector performance and for producing nationally representative population-level data on mortality surveillance and causes of death. Dr. Masanja was part of the team that developed the District Health Accounts (DHA) tool as part of the Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project (TEHIP). The tool is incorporated into the President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) Planning and Reporting Tool (PlanRep2) and is now used by districts for planning and resource allocation. Dr. Masanja has served as a member of several technical working groups, including the Ministry of Health Monitoring and Evaluation and eHealth Steering Committee. He is currently the Chair of Shule Direct a NGO for digital learning and teaching, Board member of the Ifakara Innovation Hub and the Tanzania Training Center for International Health (TTCIH).
