Bempu is a life-saving baby temperature monitoring wristband designed to drastically reduce rates of hypothermia and temperature related illnesses in resource-poor settings, like those in India. If a newborn’s body temperature falls outside the safe 37 °C range, the band intuitively alerts the mother to take action well before any life-threating issues occur. The band is safe, affordable, and simple to use in the hospital or home. Bempu aims to raise the standard of health care for 27 million infants born every year in India, and millions more around the world.

While growing up, Ratul was fortunate to travel to several low-income countries. Seeing firsthand the disparity in quality-of-life that exists, he became determined to do something about it. At Stanford, he became infatuated with health technology and graduated with a BS & MS in biomechanical engineering. Ratul then developed several medical devices for Johnson & Johnson and Embrace Innovations, a medical social enterprise in India. After visiting and speaking with countless doctors, nurses and mothers all over India, Ratul identified a long list of unmet health needs. Now, he founded Bempu, an organization tackling this list through the development of appropriate and affordable health technologies.
