Sindhu K. Srinivas, MD, MSCE, Professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Srinivas is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Executive Director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania–Cedar Avenue, and Associate Chief Medical Officer for Quality and Safety for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. An obstetrician–gynecologist and maternal–fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Srinivas leads a nationally recognized research program spanning clinical and epidemiologic studies as well as health services and care delivery research. Her work examines how innovative models of care—and the organization and structure of health systems and care delivery —shape maternal outcomes across prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum settings, with a sustained focus on advancing equity.
For more than 15 years, Dr. Srinivas’s scholarship has explored racial and ethnic differences in care and outcomes. She co-developed the Heart Safe Motherhood program to improve postpartum follow-up for patients with preeclampsia, a complication affecting approximately 10 percent of pregnancies and a major contributor to postpartum morbidity and mortality. Her work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Health Affairs, Medical Care, Health Services Research, American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Through her hospital leadership roles, Dr. Srinivas is dedicated to strengthening health care delivery for vulnerable populations by aligning clinical operations, quality and safety infrastructure, and policy priorities to reduce preventable harm and close gaps in access and outcomes. She partners across disciplines and with community stakeholders to design scalable, patient-centered approaches—especially for those at highest risk—translating evidence into operational improvements and policies that support timely and equitable care.
Dr. Srinivas is actively engaged in Philadelphia-wide efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and has served on both the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Maternal Mortality Review Committees. Nationally, she is an active member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and just completed her term as SMFM President.
