Francesca Taraballi, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Houston Methodist Research Institute and Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Regeneration. Her research focuses on immunoengineering, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and RNA therapeutics, with a strong emphasis on translating innovative technologies toward clinical application.

A central theme of her work is the design of biomaterials and therapeutic solutions that respond to real clinical needs. Historically, many medical devices and treatment strategies have been developed without adequately considering sex as a biological variable, despite its important role in disease presentation, immune responses, tissue biology, and therapeutic outcomes. Dr. Taraballi is interested in incorporating these differences into the design and evaluation of biomaterials, particularly when they can influence the effectiveness and clinical relevance of a technology.

She is also actively involved in the development and translation of advanced RNA based therapies, including mRNA delivery platforms. Alongside her scientific work, she has pursued training in healthcare public policy at the Baker Institute, reflecting her broader interest in how science, policy, and healthcare systems can work together to improve access to emerging therapies. Her long term goal is to contribute not only to the development of innovative biomaterials and RNA based treatments, but also to policies that can make these advanced technologies accessible to the patients who need them.
