Alpizar holds a bachelor’s in biology in 2001 and Magister Scientieae in Biology with an emphasis in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of Costa Rica. He received his doctorate from the University of Bergen, Norway. He held a post-doctorate position at the Finsen Laboratory, University Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and CIEMIC of the University of Costa Rica.
